Seeing reports today that the war effort in Iraq is hitting the most Iraqi resistance seen since the actual fighting started. (Wow, was it only on Thursday?) Apparently, the Iraqi fighters are using very underhanded tactics -- mixing with civilians, using residential areas as temporary bases and bunkers, pretending to surrender and then opening fire, ambushing support troops, etc. Real guerilla tactics.

Well, duh. When you're outgunned in your own home, you don't fight fair. At the same time, I can't really respect them for putting civilians in danger just to protect their own asses. Of course, they could just have the attitude that "these civilians should die rather than be 'conquered'." I couldn't really say.

What does bother me is the reaction that this news causes, in the deep, dark parts of my psyche. There's a part of me that just wants to say, "Kill the fuckers. Kill them all. Don't worry about Iraqi civilians, because it's not our fault their own troops are putting them in harm's way. Can't make an omelet without breaking a few eggs, right? Well, some cluster bombs or "daisy cutters" or napalm would serve as Grade-A egg-breaking equipment. This is war, after all. Fuck them."

This scares me a bit. The reptilian part of my brain wants to crush our enemies, see them driven before us, and hear the lamentations of their women. The conscious part of my brain is trying to reel that part in. I try to keep a civil, humane spin on things in my mind...

...but deep down, part of me wants to see Baghdad and Basra smashed like Dresden, just because we could do it.

Eh...

Don't worry about it. It's no different than really wanting to choke the bajesus out of an annoying customer - it's just on a larger scale. Of course the reaction is "those fuckers!", but the second reaction is more civilized. So no worries. It's not like you've got icewater veins or anything.
