Our furnace is now repaired, and gas-powered heat once again fills our home. This is good, because electric heat tripped our breakers twice last night (most notably when I plugged in my monster of a laptop; oops). This was easily among the best experiences I've ever had with a service/repair call. We made an appointment for Wednesday, and I made plans to work from home today as I wasn't sure when the repairman would arrive. At around 7:40 this morning, I get a call from the shop (A & D Heating and Cooling - local folks, look them up for your needs), saying that they had our ticket and that they could come by at any time.

"Sure, we're here, so come on by." Ten minutes later, he was at our house looking at our furnace. It turns out that we needed a new gas valve. He replaced it, checked the roof to make sure that the roofers hadn't damaged the flue cap (which they hadn't; he was impressed), wrote out the paperwork, collected payment ($246 for the whole visit and repairs, which wasn't too bad), gave us his card with personal cell number in case we have an emergency, and was on his way in just about an hour. He was friendly, polite, explained any issues that we might have and what we can do about them, and was just a pleasure to work with.

A++ would call again.

Awesome! I'm glad it was taken care of so quickly. Being warm is sort of important.
