Good news and bad news
Always comes in pairs, doesn't it?
The good news is that I really enjoy my new workplace. There's a great team dynamic, as well as a sense that everyone is on board and is working to make the company a success, from the top on down. Everyone's been really friendly, and the little perks in the office and the overall attitude have made me feel right at home. Right now, the work is light, but I do a lot of studying to discover how their systems are put together and how everything works. There's a lot I have to learn - transitioning form mostly PHP development with some Java to exclusively Java development is a bit of a wake-up call as far as how out-of-date I am with Java - but I'm learning quickly (or so I hope). Give me a couple of weeks, and I'll have my Java legs firmly back under me. Right now, though, I'm holding my own well enough.
The bad news is that, as I feared, we're pretty much out of money. We're running on $200 for the next two weeks, which won't get us very far. Fortunately, we've got some food assistance to pick up tomorrow, so that should help stretch out our supplies for a while. The Thanksgiving holiday helps too, both in the sense of having a shorter work week (and thus less commuting) and in getting a free meal with my parents on Thanksgiving. Still, there are more bills due in the middle of next week that will start to cut into that $200, and our supplies will start to dwindle fast. Now, there is a caveat. I have a check for some freelance work that's supposedly on its way. I haven't seen it yet, but I keep holding out hope. Suffice to say that it's sizable enough to cover us until my first paycheck, and then some. I keep praying that it arrives and, barring that, praying for the strength and wisdom to get through these very temporary tight times.
Despite the money woes, my mood is good. I know it's a temporary thing from which we'll bounce back, and it's teaching us to enjoy little things again. I've also got enough entertainment available that I'm not fretting not being able to buy anything right now. I have my eyes on a couple of things that go on sale at PF on Friday (curse you, one-day sales), but I can live without them if I don't have the money by then.
So all in all, doing well, although the next two weeks will have a high suckage quotient.
