So, the new job...

We'll just break this down into pros and cons.

Pros:
+ About 15 miles closer; I'll be using 2/3rds of the gas that I did before.
+ The pay is substantially better. I'll know exactly how much better when I get that first paycheck.
+ I get to focus on one programming language (Java) instead of having to be a jack-of-all-trades (Java, PHP, ColdFusion, etc.)
+ It's an entirely different style of development than what I did at my last job, so it's an opportunity to do new things, to be challenged, and to grow.
+ The environment is comfortable, relaxed, yet still very professional.
+ The workload seems relatively light; no juggling a half-dozen widely disparate projects at once.
+ It's a growing company, rather than a stagnating/shrinking one.
+ Dual widescreen monitors. Oh yeah. :)
+ Beer Fridays. Not entirely sure what that entails, but I'm intrigued.

Cons:
- I don't have an office anymore, just a cube which I need to start decorating. Still, that's not a totally bad thing. I was feeling very isolated in my old office.
- Because it's a new style of development for me, I have a lot to learn/relearn. I'm hoping that I won't look like an idiot.
- It's a generally very quiet office. Good thing I have my iPod and headphones.
- I haven't yet settled in and started being very social, but that will change with time, I'm sure.
- Not eligible for medical insurance for another 4 weeks.
- I think I'm the only one in the development department who'll be around on the day before Thanksgiving. EEK!

You will inform me more of this "Beer Fridays" concept as details emerge. Mayhaps I shall renew and hasten my studies of the wonders of Java.

As far as the cubes are concerned, it could be worse. Right before he left, Bobby's old company was bought out by another one. After he left, the new company took away all the cubes (since they don't believe in them) and forced everyone to face each other and work at a long table. No privacy whatsoever.

Any chance of making a small "companion cube shrine" in your "cube"? ;P

Having a cube is probably a better option than an isolated office, especially when you start at a new company. Nothing worse than being the freaky hermit in his cave no one talks to - it's just bad for bidness relationships.

Also - beer Friday can only be win. When Nikki worked at Socket, they had those and she embraced it to the point where she had a well stocked mini-fridge at her desk.
