Chemical plant explosion rocks east Kansas City

I didn't hear the explosions, but I did see the smoke shortly afterwards. When the fire/explosion took out a transformer, it made our power flicker several times. I looked out the window to see if something out there was awry, and oh, was there.

This was taken about 1-2 minutes after the initial explosion/power flicker.

I spread the news and got everyone looking out my window, and then out on the fire escape, as the massive plume of black smoke kept growing and growing. Soon afterwards, we noticed that the wind was carrying it directly towards us and over downtown KC.

10 minutes after the explosion, the plume and cloud had grown quite large.

Shortly after that, we found out that the explosion was at a chemical plant, and not knowing exactly what was in that plant, we decided to close up shop early rather than sticking around and finding out. Turns out, it's a lot of petrochemicals and solvents and such. Apparently, planes that have been going near the cloud have had globs of mineral oil (and a coating of who knows what else) accumulating on their surface.

Well that explains the power flickering out in Lenexa, too.
