Incompetent Phisher
Jul. 28th, 2005 10:15 amSo I got a PayPal phishing attempt in my email today. Nothing unusual; they used all the standard tricks - official PayPal graphics, used a graphical link to hide the real URL to their phishing page, and even had the phishing page mimic PayPal exactly. If someone didn't look at the URL, they could be easily taken for a ride.
I did check the URL, though. The braniac who's phishing used their own domain name in the email. The link and graphic both point back to a domain registered through GoDaddy, and one of the people on the site match the domain registant's name. Either this phisher didn't consider any basic detective work, or someone's hijacked his domain and he hasn't checked his file system in a while. Either way, he's been reported to PayPal.
Dumb bastard.
