I will write more about A-Kon later, as I have one hand-written journal entry to type out, and a couple of other days to write about... but instead, I shall write about the return trip.
You see, during the return trip, we were driving through northern Oklahoma, having recently stopped for dinner and fuel, and I noticed that the "Service Engine" and "Battery Warning" lights were on. Also, the temperature gauge was pegged in the red. Fortunately, there was an exit with a truck stop just over the next hill, and we pulled in. The antifreeze was boiling, and the oil was low, so we let the car cool down and refilled both fluids. Upon closer inspection,. I noticed that we'd lost the serpentine belt (which kept the alternator and water pump from working). So, we were stuck in northern Oklahoma with a broken belt, with no service station or hotel in sight, on a Sunday evening. Fortunately, I was able to make some calls, and found the number to a local service station that did after-hours service calls. Unfortunately, the parts store was closed, so they weren't able to fix the car that night, but the service crew picked us up at our car, helped us load our essentials from our car to their truck, and took us to a nearby motel for the night. No frills, but hey, they had HBO, and I had my GBA and good company, so we were set for the night. This morning, they picked us up with our own car, got us the bill (which was under $100) and even recharged the A/C for free (that was VERY nice of them). The ride back? Utterly uneventful. No unusual lights or readings, and the car runs fine. I still need to get the alignment looked at, but that's not a critical item (I'll get it done after my next paycheck).
So, we are home, safe and sound, and all is well in the world.
