Nov. 6th, 2002 09:35 amI think Fark's headline on the election results says it best...
Republicans: "All your states are belong to us."
So, for the next 2 years, we get a rubber-stamp congress for Dubya. Not that it really matters, I suppose. The Democrats don't stand for much of anything any more. I agree with
flwyd; two-party politics don't seem to work very well. Of course, that would first require the minor parties -- the Greens, the Libertarians, the Reformists, and others -- to actually get some media attention that didn't treat them as crackpot splinter groups. I'd wager that the vast majority of voters either don't know that these parties exist, or don't have a clue what they stand for.
To get that message out, these parties need funding. With the major parties voraciously hogging the lion's share of fundraising, there's little left to go around, especially with McCain-Feingold in effect as of 12:01 this morning.
So what will I do? When I update my voter information, I think I'll register as a Green Party member. I'll encourage my friends to do the same. Even if the party has little chance of making a direct impact now, that can change. The Greens are a lot closer to my stand on the major issues than either major party, so even if I can't make decisive votes, I can vote my conscience.
