Overheating leads to suffering...
Apr. 30th, 2002 11:19 amI think my computer overheats at night.
Last night, I was trying to burn a CD for a friend, and I went through 3 burns that all died in the middle, taking the entire system with it. In each case, when I finally rebooted the system and removed the CD-R blank, it was very warm to the touch. Not quite burning hot, but very very warm. I finally gave up in disgust, vowing to try again in the morning.
This morning, after the computer had several hours of down-time, I booted up and tried the burn again. Worked on the first try, and when I removed the disk, it was cool to the touch. If it was warmer than the ambient temperature in the room, I didn't notice - in fact, it felt cooler than the room.
I'd say that's pretty good evidence of overheating wrecking my system. Time to get a fan or two, and time to get some more air holes in the desk for the system to cool off... and if I could afford it, some rounded cables to improve airflow. Possibly a better case, too - that old Gateway case that Daki's in just doesn't cut the mustard like it should.
