My foray into deeper geekitude, chapter III - a brief interlude...
Now that I'm briefly between personal projects (although I expect to pick PHLog back up in a day or two), I'm on the search for some information to absorb. Preferably, a programming book that I can just sit down and read cover to cover, devouring all the yummy information within. I think I might start with my Programming Perl book, since I've actually never read it in entirety...
Come to think about it, I don't think I've read a single (non-fiction) book I have in entirety. I tend to start skipping around, looking for the parts that are sparking my interest at that moment. Programming books, textbooks, role-playing books... I just can't seem to sit and tune out either the world or my own mind long enough to focus. This seems to be the running theme for my life - an inability to focus. Either I get distracted, or I get bored, or both.
Oh, and why Perl, when I already know it? Well, I need to grok Perl in fullness. I just need to know it inside and out. I need to make myself an expert at something. After Perl, PHP, and after PHP, Java... it's time I caught up to the newest versions of Java. I thought about C++, as I've got 3 C++ primers on my desk at work, but unfortunately none of them actually show how to do anything worthwhile with the language. Theory is great and all, but when it comes to programming, I need pragmatic instruction. I want applied knowledge.
And maybe I'll read some of my D&D books straight through, just to understand the system inside and out. It'll help me make a habit of reading sequentially, so that I get better absorption. Right now, I just get this really haphazardly disjointed understanding of whatever it is I'm reading, and I end up filling the blanks in at the last minute as needed.
And maybe I should get some water... I'm thirsty!
