Saw a guy trying to hitchhike to Utah today on my drive in to work. I can't even try to imagine travelling like that, standing on the side of a highway, everything stuffed into a duffle bag or backpack, holding a crudely-drawn cardboard sign, stuck out in the elements, not knowing when your next ride will stop to pick you up, or even if someone will stop at all.
At what point do you give up and just start walking? Walking to Utah... and at what point does hope kick back in and you try your luck again?
Of course, there's no way for me to know where he started his trip from. Maybe he started way out on the East Coast, and he's made it this far. That suddenly puts a bit of perspective on it -- he's hitched halfway across the country at that point; why stop now?
That is someone who makes it on faith alone.
