Brakes, infoporn, soccer, and Rome
What started out as a routine oil change on Saturday morning turned into five hours and $660 dollars spent at the service shop. My brakes had been a bit squeaky when I'd first start driving in the cold, so I figured something was up. Turns out my discs had developed some grooves in them that were glazing up. Nothing like braking on ice to make you feel good in the morning, so it was time to get them replaced, along with maintenance on the back brakes. The upshot of all of this is that I had a good chunk of Saturday morning to wander around the little shopping center.
While there, I wandered into the Goodwill store and browsed their used book section. I found a lucky little find - The Book of Lists. You see, I'm a triviaphile. I love collecting useless tidbits of information, and this book is a goldmine. Who cares that it was published in 1977 (and thus is as old as I am)? It was 49 cents, and most of the facts are still valid. For someone who's an info junkie like I am, this is like porn. Vintage porn, in fact. It was even a bit nostalgic - my dad used to have a copy of the book that I would peruse. Apparently, there's a newer version out now, published in 2005, and it's very tempting. I'm happy with my little old paperback, though.
Also, this weekend marked my first foray into sports (or, hell, strenuous physical activity that's not DDR-related) since high school. I joined the company soccer team, and our first game was on Sunday. I mostly played defense, although I only managed to play between one-third and one-half of the game because I made an important discovery: I have exercise-induced asthma. I need to see the doctor this week to verify, and see if I can get an inhaler. I want to play more, so if that's what it takes to do so, that's what I'll do.
On a completely unrelated note, I'm thinking about rewatching Rome and/or picking up the second season on DVD before too long. Why? Because White Wolf put out Requiem for Rome, a book on playing nWoD vampires in the days of the Roman Empire. I don't even have Vampire: the Requiem, but I'm sorely tempted to pick up both V:tR and RfR soon (why, halo thar 40% off Borders coupon), if for no other reason than to run a one-shot Rome game. The intrigue, passion, and violence of Rome makes it the perfect setting for Vampire.

But that's cool you're playing. I do miss playing soccer. But right now if I wanted to do that I'd have to cut something else out to add something new.
I'm guessing it's indoor soccer since it's a tad cold to be playing outdoor. Where are you all playing at? Is this just a recreational team of coworkers, or is this a leauge at the company or is this team getting ready for the KC Corporate Challenge?
And yeah, when I read the title I was thinking you were listening to Jim Rome (sports talk guy) and Rome had another tirade about how much he dislikes soccer. heh.
