Bad news, and bad news

Bad news #1: The A/C unit (might be a heat pump, not sure) stopped working today.
Bad news #2: I have no idea how much it's going to cost to fix it, but I can't imagine it'll be inexpensive.

Why do I have a feeling we're going to go from hot and stable to cool and broke?
