A week away from the big 2-5.

One more week and I'll be a quarter of a century old. Funny how that sounds. "Twenty-five" doesn't seem like all that much, y'know. 25 cents in a quarter isn't much, and even 25 bucks isn't a huge amount. When you put it in terms of a century, though, it always seems like a lot more. A quarter of a century just seems more impressive. And my, how things have changed in that span.

I can play my PS2, which can push millions of textured polys onto my TV screen at once, and yet I remember being mesmerized by 8-bit pixels on my NES. Going back and playing those games again on an emulator makes me realize how BAD they look compared to today's games, but back then they were awesome.

I remember thinking that Voltron was the greatest show ever, and wanting Voltron toys so badly (which I never got). Then I watched it again on Cartoon Network, and realized how absolutely terrible a show it really is. Back then, though, it was high sci-fi adventure to me.

I complain sometimes that my computer isn't up to snuff, and I celebrated when I received a 1.3 GHz Athlon to put in it... but then I remember our old PC XT that ran at 4.77 MHz, and had a turbo button to go up to 10 MHz. That turbo button was almost too much on some games - they'd become unplayable. I couldn't even have imagined what I could do with a computer 15 to 20 years down the road.

Maybe I've gotten a bit spoiled by technological advances; it's easy to do. Bigger Better Faster More, right? I just hope I don't get too jaded or snobbish about technically un-advanced fun as I get older. :)

Side Note: In a week, my LJ will be a year old, too.
