The Middle.
May. 20th, 2002 10:11 amEver feel like God tries to talk to you through a song? Yesterday at church, they played Jimmy Eat World's "The Middle" as the opener - it was a totally kick-ass rendition of the song, and got my heart pumping and my head banging. Anyway, today I'm at work, and I decided to grab an MP3 of the song to listen to; also grabbed the acoustic version just for shits and grins too. Added the two to my playlist, hit play... and for the first time, really listened to the song. I know it's a song about non-conformity, but there's more there...
"Hey, don't write yourself off yet
It's only in your head you feel left out
Or looked down on.
Just do your best, do everything you can.
And don't you worry what they tell themselves when you're away.
It just takes some time, little girl you're in the middle of the ride.
Everything will be just fine, everything will be alright.
Hey, you know they're all the same.
You know you're doing better on your own, so don't buy in.
Live right now.
Yeah, just be yourself.
It doesn't matter if it's good enough for someone else.
It just takes some time, little girl you're in the middle of the ride.
Everything will be just fine, everything will be alright.
Hey, don't write yourself off yet.
It's only in your head you feel left out
Or looked down on.
Just do your best, do everything you can.
And don't you worry what the bitter hearts are gonna say.
It just takes some time, little girl you're in the middle of the ride.
Everything will be just fine, everything will be alright."
Okay, so I'm not a girl, but the rest of the song is pretty damn clear. I've got these paranoid delusions that people won't like me, that they'll talk behind my back and plot against me if I try to stick my head out and be social. The song's right... it's all in my head, and even if they did talk behind my back, I shouldn't worry about it.
So thank you, God, for having Jimmy Eat World send me this message from you. I needed to hear it.
