Long, but good, day
I left work early today to swing by Mom and Dad's place so I could pick up some antibiotics for Z. See, a friend of theirs is a medical technician of sorts - not quite a doctor, but more than a nurse, and can prescribe medicine - and gave them a bunch of sample packs, since my mom occasionally gets upper respiratory problems from working around musty books. Anyway, mom gave us about 10 days worth of medicine, which comes to about $180. She also threw in a bottle of barely-used expectorant cough syrup and a prescription-strength inhaler.
God, thank you for making my mom so awesome that she looks out after Z's health when we don't have the resources to do it ourselves.
Dad also gave me his computer's old case, complete with fan, so we can rebox Tadaka and hopefully fix his overheating problems. This case is better than our old case - the Gateway case doesn't even have a Reset button! - but not as sweet as his new case, which is made of polished aluminum or some other shiny silver metal. Very very pretty - I did lust after it when I saw it.
Anyway, went home, delivered the goods to Z, then took her out for new shoes and dark chocolate. She found 2 pairs that she really liked, and got them at an awesome discount. She said it was the least painful shoe shopping she'd ever done. A quick trip by B&N to visit the Mags, then a stop at Fazoli's to pick up dinner (since we had little to cook that would be good for the sickie), and home again. We ate our dinner, smiled a lot at each other, then watched some stand-up on Comedy Central and laughed our asses off - which is not good for someone with an upper respiratory infection... but good for the soul nonetheless.
Ran the puppy down with lots of play and a couple of walks, and watched the storms approach from the east. Nothing horrific, thank God, but the skies were painted yellow and dark blue-gray. It was absolutely beautiful. Once we had the Ein sleeping, I kissed my wife and took off to join Dennis, Dan, and crew at Lunar Bowl for some more bowling.
It was "Cosmic Bowling" night, which means that they turned on the blacklights and the disco lights, and you could bowl as many games as you wanted between 10 and 2 for one price. Got in 4 games, and got to listen to some absolutely god-awful karaoke while playing them. Not only did I break 100 in my first game of the evening, I actually won the 4th game with a 146, which is absolutely amazing for me.
A few notes from the night:
- "Cosmic Bowling" also means a lot of cute teen and 20-something girls come out to bowl. This is good because most of them are, well, cute. This is also bad because then you see the braces and/or how young they really are, and it's suddenly not so good.
- Teenaged girls are also capable of infinite screams of encouragment when anyone is doing karaoke. Never walk by the table when someone asks for applause - you will be deafened.
- Overcompensating is as bad for your game - or for life - as undercompensating.
- If someone shuffles over to the lane, just drops the ball, and shuffles away, it's a good bet that they're not enjoying themselves.
- Only Spinal Tap can get away with speakers and amps that go up to 11. In a bowling alley, it's a bit much.
- Dan, Mark, and Richard doing karaoke is one of the scariest things I will ever witness. The only thing scarier, I think, would be Dennis doing a karaoke of Tubthumping by Chumbawumba. Thank God I haven't seen that... yet.
- It's all about the wrist brace.
